Wearing Jewelry Then & Now: Art Nouveau

Wearing Jewelry Then & Now: Art Nouveau

Ahh, Art Nouveau...

This fanciful movement was a flash in the pan, spanning from approximately 1890 to 1910 and within the Belle Époque period, and was characterized by asymmetry or whiplash lines and inspired by natural forms, such as the sinuous curves of plants or flowers or a woman's natural curves. Think Alphonse Mucha, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Gaudi, Lalique, Georges Fouquet to name a few popular names during this time.

Needless to say, I adore this time period - everything was fanciful, from common household items to art and architecture, and of course, to jewelry.

Art Nouveau jewelry seems to be more and more difficult to find. As the time period was short and tastes changed after the first World War, Art Nouveau jewelry is a rare treat indeed. So, how was it worn then and how can it be worn now?

Large Art Nouveau jewelry pieces were worn by a select few - well-known entertainers, such as Sarah Bernhardt, and unmarried women who were supported by wealthy lovers and considered to be on the fringes of acceptable society. Many Art Nouveau pieces depicted naked women, which was shocking for the time. Of course many smaller Art Nouveau pieces, think pendants and hair adornments, were also worn by the stylish ladies of the time.

Many fine Art Nouveau jewelry pieces are crafted in yellow gold, and as yellow gold remains a strong daily wear trend, these pieces are infinitely wearable today.

How can we wear these fanciful pieces today? Firstly, there is no wrong way to wear your jewelry!  But, if you're seeking a few tips for how to incorporate these pieces into your daily jewelry wardrobe, here are a few for your enjoyment...

  • Art Nouveau pieces play well with florals (I know, groundbreaking!), so pair these pieces with a floral motif in your outfit for a cohesive look
  • Art Nouveau pins may come with a collapsible bail, so add these pieces to your next #neckmess for a great look; also, I love to "pin" a brooch through the links of a chain for a different way to wear the brooch
  • Art Nouveau designs were influential in the psychedelic 1960s and 1970s, so rock that Art Nouveau piece with a vintage 60s, 70s band tee for a cool and fresh look
  • Of course, any Art Nouveau brooch stands on its own, so add your special piece to the lapel of any blazer or jacket for a feminine flourish

There are many, many more resources out there discussing Art Nouveau jewelry in much greater detail (this post merely scratches the surface), and if this artistic jewelry style appeals to you, suggest searching around the interwebs for more content.
